Small Biz, Think Big Series
Session 3 - Technology
Sponsored by Tompkins Trust Company and TC3.biz
You have: passwords, network security codes, client credit card information. They have: hackers, viruses, cookies, trojans. How do you keep your business network and data safe?
It's the age of invisible information, swirling all around us as we move through our day. When that winged information is sensitive and critical to your business, you need to be sure you're the only one who's snatching it out of the air. Most small businesses have one or more of the following elements: wireless networks, PDA's used by owners or managers, laptops with proprietary information and servers which contain sensitive, even sacred client information. Much of this technology is emerging and evolving quickly. This seminar will give you an immediately usable kit of security tools and methods to protect your data and your business. Simple steps taken now can avoid costly, even mortal damage to your business operations.
Presenter: Alan McCarty, Assistant VP, Learning Technology
Alan joined the eCornell Management Team in 2008 as Assistant Vice President, Learning Technology. His responsibilities include the oversight of daily technology operations, application development, and overall learning technology strategy. His membership on the Management Team allows eCornell to turn ideas into reality through the use of rapid-prototyping and accelerated system design. After initially joining eCornell in 2001, Alan left to work for Sungard Availability Services, but returned in 2006 to lead eCornell's technology initiatives. Prior to joining eCornell, he held positions in system and network administration, network design and project management at various institutions of higher education.

The Chamber Welcomes Rick's Rental World!
Rick's Rental World was established in 1976 by Bernie and Ellie Rick, offering a wide variety of rental equipment here in Ithaca, NY. To this day, there are three generations of the Rick family running the business, providing exceptional customer service, and maintaining their philosophy "Where Quality, Selection and Courtesy Are A Way of Life". Serving Contractors, Industry and Individuals, Rick's Rental World offers party and banquet supplies, contractor's equipment and tools for the home and yard.
Rick's Rental World, being locally owned and operated, takes the interaction with their customers very seriously. We are always listening for new items to offer and other ways to improve our service. We recently invested in an entirely new tent line for weddings and corporate events and the response has been excellent! This new line of tents has introduced us to a whole new clientele and we are enjoying it. In addition to this one example from our party line, we are constantly trying to update and improve the large variety of equipment that we offer for rental. It is a constant challenge, but an enjoyable one!
As with many of you, we thoroughly enjoy this area of New York and have chosen to stay here and raise our families. We work hard to fulfill our philosophy as stated above. We look forward to the opportunity to at least meet you and to possibly take care of any rental needs that you may have. Please stop in or visit our website at ricksrentalworld.com.

Ithaca Coffee Company Tavern Holds Ribbon Cutting
Ithaca Coffee Company has opened a new Tavern at its Triphammer Marketplace location. The tavern serves 12 craft beers on tap, wine by the glass, cheese platters, popcorn, sandwiches, and snacks.
Owner Julie Crowley says, "We've had the Tavern at Gateway for a few years, and we knew there was a market for a Tavern at Triphammer - and customers are excited about the new space. They come back to our beer section, and are surprised to see the Tavern. Our Friday Happy Hour has been very popular, after the wine tasting at Triphammer Wines & Spirits. It's also a nice space to sit and enjoy your morning coffee."
The Ithaca Coffee Company stands for Big City Feel with Small Town Friendly Service and offers a great place to sit for a pint of craft beer, a glass of wine, coffee or artisan cheese with a snack. "We feel this new tavern will turn into a favorite destination for the neighborhood and Lansing. We have no doubt it will draw more people to the Triphammer Marketplace and offer a new experience to our customers," Julie added.
The Tavern offers weekly beer tastings Wednesdays at 5-7 pm and a Happy Hour on Fridays 5-8 pm, in addition to unique events and tastings. "Having a meeting place where everyone can find their favorite drink, from coffee to wine and a favorite snack is a great addition to the Marketplace and the area."

After nearly six years in our Third Street location, Instant Replay Sports has moved to a new, bigger, expanded location in the Triphammer Marketplace! We are located on the Triphammer Rd. side of the Triphammer Marketplace next to the Ithaca Coffee Company and the Ithaca Bakery.
Our new location is about two and a half times bigger than our previous location and is allowing us to continue to carry all of the pre-owned options you have been accustomed to, and we are expanding the selection of our new options in many of the sports/activities you love, such as golf, tennis, baseball, lacrosse, and hockey. We are also adding a skate sharpener soon to allow us to provide that service directly to you. The Chamber Welcomes Oldies 101.5 - A "One-of-a-Kind" Radio Station
In June 1991 WXHC-FM 101.5 in Homer/Cortland went on the air. The station was started by John and Bruce Eves who both grew up in Cortland. John had spent many years as a TV/radio sportscaster in Colorado and Syracuse after graduating from Ithaca College.
Over the 20 plus years that WXHC has been on the air the format has changed three times, first starting out as "Hometown Radio", then "MIX 101.5" and since 2002, Oldies 101.5 - "Cortland County's Radio Station".
"One of a kind" would be the best way to describe them having really no set play list, playing thousands of different songs from the 60's, 70' and 80's.Involvement in the local community is their major focus, whether it's the Dairy parade, Bluegrass on the Green, Relay for Life and numerous fundraisers. They also broadcast numerous local sporting events from High school football (Cortland, Homer, Dryden, Tully, Groton) to SUNY Cortland Football. They also have Syracuse University football and basketball and now the New York Jets. They really provide a full service in a small community.
Another major focus of the station is LOCAL NEWS. News director Eric Mulvihill has been with the station for over ten years covering literally everything. Their local lineup of area DJ's includes Bobby Comstock Jr. in the mornings, Karen Lewis afternoons, and Mike Eves "Mike at Night" John's son. The station is a family affair with John's wife of 25 years Patty, the office manager.
The station also provides specialty-programming including JukeBox Saturday Night with Bobby Comstock Jr., Meet Cortland County and The Community Bulletin Board.
Finally WXHC continues to expand their digital presence as they stream their radio signal at WXHC.com and with their smartphone app. They have also just redesigned their website adding many new features such as "On-Demand". WXHC is truly LOCAL Radio!

New Life Presbyterian Church: New Location |
The first worship service of New Life Presbyterian Church was held in 1988 in the Women's Community Building (WCB) at the corner of Cayuga and Seneca Streets in downtown Ithaca. After nearly 25 years of holding weekly services at the WCB, New Life Presbyterian Church is moving to a new location for Sunday services since the WCB will be replaced by an apartment building developed by the Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services.
Beginning Sunday, April 15, 2012, New Life Presbyterian Church (NLPC) will hold worship services and educational classes every Sunday at 9:30AM at the Cinemapolis Theater, 120 E. Green Street. This central location will continue to make NLPC easy to reach for both Cornell and Ithaca College students as well as allow us to be a vibrant presence in downtown Ithaca. NLPC is grateful for the friendship that has been forged with Lynne Cohen and Rich Szanyl, founders and executive directors of Cinemapolis. "It is a win-win situation for both of us," Lynne Cohen says. "The cinema was previously empty on Sunday mornings. We are able to provide a warm and welcoming environment for New Life church and the cinema will benefit from the revenue the church provides."
Rev. Steve Froehlich, NLPC pastor since 1998, says NLPC is committed to being part of the downtown community and serving our city. The church's vision statement puts it this way: "God's grace gives us a love for our city and a longing to promote its flourishing in every way." That commitment is expressed in NLPC's long-time membership in the Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce, support of the Community Faith Partners, the Ithaca Pregnancy Center, and participation in the Healing Ithaca initiative to promote racial reconciliation, among others.
Intellectual and artistic enrichment is important to the mission of NLPC as well. "Caring for the whole person and being good stewards of the world are at the core of historic biblical Christianity," says Rev. Froehlich. "Loving God in a relationship with Jesus Christ re-shapes learning and living, work and worship -- every part of who we are and how we live our lives." In 2000, NLPC helped launch the Chesterton House Center for Christian Studies at Cornell. Chesterton House helps faculty and students think critically about life, learning, and culture in light of the Christian faith; it is now one of the most significant Christian study centers in the US. Over the past dozen years, NLPC has hosted several outstanding concert and theatre events.
The office of New Life Presbyterian Church is located at 408 N. Tioga Street in Ithaca. More information can be found at www.newlifepc.net or on Facebook - New Life Presbyterian Church, Ithaca, NY. New Life Presbyterian Church is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America.
New Life church welcomes our community to join us for worship at 9:30am on Sunday mornings at Cinemapolis, beginning April 15, 2012. We plan to celebrate our new location on May 6, with a reception immediately following the worship service. |

Tompkins Chamber Awarded $30,000 Grant |
The Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce has been awarded a grant from the Community Service Society of New York (CSS) through its outreach program, called Community Health Advocates (CHA), to help serve the small business community through a new Small Business Assistance Program (SBAP). The Tompkins Chamber is one of thirteen organizations that will form a statewide network to provide outreach and assistance to small businesses in their communities regarding access to health care and health insurance. Community Health Advocates (CHA) operates a similar program throughout New York State that helps individual consumers find and use health coverage and care.
Jean McPheeters, president of the Tompkins Chamber, says "This grant will allow us to reach more small businesses across Tompkins County with accurate and timely information about health insurance and access to health care. It's a great honor to be a part of this system and to help form the SBAP." Several of the other awardees in the region are the Greater Syracuse Chamber Foundation, the Chautauqua Chamber Development Corporation, and the Greater Oswego-Fulton Chamber of Commerce.

CARS announces important training initiative |
When it comes to alcohol and other drug use we are currently at the same point we were at with cancer care in the 1960's. There are good systems and proven interventions to treat the "stage 4" drinker/substance user (estimated to be about 9% of the adult population) but that means we are often late and trying to treat a very ill person and a deeply injured family and community.
There is an intervention that can help us effectively address the "stage 1" drinker/substance user (estimated to be 21% of the adult population). There is a skill set ANYONE can learn and effectively use to find early substance abusers before things escalate and begin to destroy lives and families.
SBIRT(Screening, Brief Intervention & Referral to Treatment) is a well researched, tested, and proven model for identifying and helping "the 21%" that often remain hidden.
CARS is offering a series of FREE four hour SBIRT training programs to establish an SBIRT network in local medical practices, schools, churches, community centers etc. Most of "the 21%" NEVER need treatment in the usual sense but a brief informational intervention that stems the tide of escalating use and its inherent risks.
To supplement the four hour training ongoing coaching and consultation will be available for up to 90 days. CARS' desire is to create an SBIRT network so we invite you to join us through this FREE training program. Call CARS at 607-273-5500.

New Small Business Initiative Announced by Governor Cuomo |
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced a statewide initiative designed to help small business owners start and grow their businesses in the state. The team will consist of employees from at least six New York State agencies including the departments of State, Labor, Taxation and Finance as well as Empire State Development, State Liquor Authority, and the Workers Compensation Board. Meetings will be held in every region of the state to talk about the state's rules and programs intended to help small businesses.
"This program is all about creating jobs because when small businesses do well, New York does well," said Governor Cuomo. "It is so important for us to get out of the office and go into communities to see how we can help anyone who wants to start, grow or improve a business and that's what this program will do."
The meetings closest to Tompkins County are:
