ITHACA NAMED TOP-10 GREAT PLACES TO LIVE BY KIPLINGER’S PERSONAL FINANCE

Rankings place Ithaca #8 in value and livability among small and mid-size cities

Ithaca’s ranking reflects access to good jobs, reasonably priced homes, good schools, and access to great healthcare

ITHACA, NY - July 25, 2013 - The Ithaca/Tompkins County Convention and Visitors Bureau announced today that Ithaca has been ranked #8 in Kiplinger’s Personal Finance’s list of “10 Great Places to Live” for 2013.
Standing out among cities with a population under one million residents, Kiplinger’s identified Ithaca as a city that offers an ideal mix of thriving job opportunities, reasonably priced homes, good schools, and great healthcare.

“It is an honor to learn that Ithaca has been ranked among the top-10 places to live, as it shows the great investments we make in securing the city’s future are being noticed nationally,” said Svante Myrick, Mayor, City of Ithaca. “From individual and community contributions in preservation and green practices, to large-scale issues like affordable housing development, job sustainability, and fair living wage, each of these individual building blocks come together to create a strong community foundation that all together transforms Ithaca into a top-tier place to live.”

Located at the southern tip of Cayuga Lake, and home to Cornell University and Ithaca College, Ithaca is known for its creative culture, fine restaurants and its stunning natural setting with more than 150 gorges and waterfalls within 10 miles of downtown. With more than $140 million dollars of private development being invested within two blocks of downtown Ithaca and a complete redesign of the Ithaca Commons underway, the city will experience a beautiful new downtown that will only strengthen the message that Ithaca is a great place to work and live.

“We’ve often been identified as a mix of ‘brains and beauty,’ and this is one of those instances when it really rings true,” said Jean McPheeters, President, Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce. “We not only look good on paper, but the city boasts great recreational opportunities, theatre, and dining choices that rival top metros across the country. Ranking among Kiplinger’s top places to live shows the statistics line up on our side, but it’s not until you visit Ithaca that you can truly understand why we’re identified as a top ten city to lay down roots.”

The Kiplinger rankings place an emphasis on small and mid-size cities, considering metro areas with a population of one million or less that have good jobs, reasonably priced homes, decent schools and access to great health care. The rankings appear in Kiplinger’s September 2013 issue—on newsstands August 6, 2013—and available
online now.
