Sciencenter Opens Updated Mini-Golf Course with Community Celebration Day
ITHACA, NY – On Saturday, September 26th, the Sciencenter opened its completed science-themed mini-golf course.
The 18-hole mini-golf course is an interactive exhibit that engages guests of all ages in a wide variety of science concepts. Built in two phases, the basic course was completed in 2014. This year, the Sciencenter Exhibits staff worked to develop and prototype science obstacles for each of the 18 holes. Made possible through a generous gift from Cargill to the Sciencenter’s current capital campaign, Curious. Confident. Inspired., the mini-golf course obstacles explore everything from the science of black holes to wind energy to simple machines and more. The course is outdoor fun that the whole family can enjoy with full wheelchair access, ADA approved clubs, and 9 recycled material benches throughout.
"We’re delighted to invite our community, who built the Sciencenter, to join us in celebrating this exciting new addition to our outdoor exhibits,” said Charlie Trautmann, Sciencenter Executive Director. “We want every young person to appreciate the power of science, and as we continue our Capital Campaign, we look forward to unveiling many new and inspiring experiences to empower the youth in our community.”
Museum guests joined the Sciencenter and representatives from Cargill for a special ribbon cutting ceremony forming a giant human battery which generated enough electricity to trigger a big flash and cut the ribbon. Immediately following, the museum offered course tours and demonstrations of each obstacle before the course officially opened for public play. Mini-golf is $5 for Sciencenter members, $7 for players (ages 4+), and toddlers ages 0 – 3 are free with a paid adult. Proceeds from mini-golf sales help support the Sciencenter's free access programs for low income families. An assortment of special hands-on activities and programs highlighting the Sciencenter’s Capital Campaign initiatives were also offered throughout the day.
The Sciencenter inspires excitement for science through interactive exhibits and programs that engage, educate and empower. The hands-on museum offers guests of all ages more than 250 exhibits, educational programs, a gift shop, an outdoor science park and a seasonal miniature golf course. The museum is open Tuesday - Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, and Sunday from noon to 5 pm. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, $6 for children 3-17 years, and free to members and children under 3. For membership information, current programs and activities, please visit www.sciencenter.org. The Sciencenter is a proud member of the Discovery Trail in Ithaca.
