After postponing the event in April, under an abundance of caution, New York State Parks and the Tompkins Chamber/Visit Ithaca are pleased to share that the Illumination of Taughannock Falls to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of New York State Parks will take place the evenings of Friday, October 4th and Saturday, October 5th.
In preparation, State Park Stewardship staff have conducted a full audit of the gorge tail and have found no evidence of Peregrine Falcons currently nesting in the gorge. Additional consultation with the New York State Department of Conservation has taken place and SEQR, specific to the event, has been performed.
This event, co-hosted by the New York State Parks and the Tompkins Chamber and Visit Ithaca, will be viewable from the Taughannock Falls Overlook each evening between 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
As part of this special event a limited number of visitors will be led on a guided hike, on the Gorge Trail, up to the base of the waterfall. Guided hikes will depart from the Gorge Trail Parking lot at 7:00 pm, 7:15 pm, and 7:30 pm each night.
Registration is free but will be limited to the first 100 people per hiking group. Appropriate clothing, shoes, insect repellent and individual flashlights are highly recommended.
